Tensions escalated in Abuja today as police fired tear gas at protesters near the federal secretariat.
Eyewitnesses said there was chaos as the tear gas dispersed the crowd, causing panic and confusion among the protesters.
Meanwhile at the Eagles Square in Abuja, a nursing mother said her husband was killed by bandits in Katsina state.
“I came to protest the hardship in Nigeria and the police are shooting tear gas at us. Do they also want to kill my baby? People cannot eat. Things are hard,” she said.
Food and basic commodities prices have skyrocketed recently.
Nigeria is facing one of the worst inflation and economic crises due to the government’s removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates.
As a result of this, Nigerians and other civil society groups have decided to hit the streets to air their grievances and make their voices heard.
