The universities were established by Jonathan. In a speech at the maiden convocation of the Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State, President Mohmmadu Buhari, noted that his administration would not condone corruption in the federal universities. Represented by the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Rasheed Adamu Abubakar, he remarked that universities must be example in good governance and financial management.
“No room for corruption in the academic sector. We are going to take a tour of all projects executed by our new federal universities to ensure that funds allocated to them are judiciously utilised. Our universities must be examples in good governance and financial management.
So, there is no room for corruption in the academic sector.” The president warned against abuse and exploitation of students.
According to him, staff and management of universities must imbibe the ethos and core values of the academic profession. He, however, lauded the Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo for establishing the Faculty of Agriculture, describing it as a step in the right direction in view of the dwindling oil economy.
Earlier in his address the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba, appreciated the Federal Government for continued provision of funds to the university despite the economic recession.
“Though we have good results, our physical environment can be better.
In the rainy season, our roads are all slippery and in the dry season, we are coated with undesired powder of dust. Buildings started at inception remain uncompleted. Our hostels are inadequate; the same with water and electricity. “The Federal Government cannot provide these all alone, and the University’s IGR is too low to address them. The University is therefore appealing to everyone to contribute to her development’’, he said.
